Okay so I'm American but I've been living abroad for years, and honestly when I see people planning their move to the US they always focus on visa costs and maybe rent. But there's so much more that'll hit your wallet hard 😅
The stuff that adds up fast
First off, healthcare is absolutely brutal if you're not used to it. Like even with insurance, you're looking at copays for literally everything. I had friends move to the States and they were shocked that a basic doctor visit cost them $30-50 AFTER insurance. And don't even get me started on prescriptions.
Then there's the whole credit thing which is honestly insane. You basically don't exist financially until you build credit history. Want to rent an apartment? Good luck without a credit score. You'll need to put down massive deposits or get a cosigner. I'm talking like 2-3 months rent upfront instead of the usual one month.
Oh and car stuff is huge. Unless you're moving to like NYC or maybe SF, you're gonna need a car. But it's not just the car payment - it's insurance (which can be crazy expensive without US driving history), registration fees, inspections in some states, and parking costs in cities that'll drain your bank account.
The sneaky expensive stuff
Tipping culture is real and it adds up. I know people say 15-20% but honestly in many places it's expected for way more services than you think. Delivery, haircuts, even some takeout places have tip screens now.
Sales tax gets people too because it's not included in prices. So that $100 item? Actually costs like $108-112 depending on the state. Seems small but when you're furnishing a whole apartment it's brutal.
Banking fees are another hidden killer. Some banks charge monthly maintenance fees, ATM fees, overdraft fees that are just ridiculous. And if you're transferring money internationally regularly, those fees add up super quick.
To be fair, salaries are often higher in the US which helps offset some of this. But man, nobody really prepares you for how nickel-and-dimed you feel in the beginning. My advice? Budget like 30% more than you think you'll need for your first 6 months. Trust me on this one lol.
Anyone else have hidden costs that surprised them? Would love to hear what caught you off guard!
